Finding Peace During Stressful Times

I know many people are deeply and directly impacted by the wildfires in California. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected. However, if you're like me and far from the danger, watching or reading the news about the fires can still cause a lot of anxiety. I’ve personally implemented a ban on televised news because it’s too difficult for me. Instead, I allow myself just a few minutes each morning and evening to read the news. It’s all I can handle, and even these brief moments can still leave me feeling anxious.
If you’re feeling similarly overwhelmed by the coverage of the fires, here’s a simple mindfulness practice that might help calm your nervous system. I’ve chosen this exercise because it’s quick and easy—anyone can do it, anytime.
When you feel your heart start racing, take three deep breaths. Try to make each one deeper than the last by focusing on fully exhaling. Afterward, spend just a few moments noticing your breath and observing your surroundings. Where are you right now? Identify 3-5 things about your environment that are true (for example, “my cup is blue” or “my dog is resting beside me”).
This exercise takes less than a minute and can help reset your nervous system, grounding you in the present moment. For me, it’s a woman sitting in a dark room, drinking coffee, with a dog at her feet. Repeat this practice as often as needed throughout the day.
I hope this simple exercise brings you some peace. From this grounded space, you can decide on any actions you’d like to take—or simply carry on with your day, addressing whatever is in front of you.
